Overview
Desloratadine is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives). It is used to relieve symptoms such as pruritus (itching), and to reduce the number and size of hives.
Desloratadine is an antihistamine that works by blocking histamine-1 (H1) receptors in the body. Histamine is a chemical that causes allergy symptoms like swelling and itching. By blocking this chemical, desloratadine helps control allergic reactions in the skin, including hives.

How do I take it?
Prescribing information states that desloratadine is typically taken by mouth once daily. Dosing size depends on factors including the age of the person taking the drug. Desloratadine should be taken exactly as directed by a healthcare provider.

Side effects
Common side effects of desloratadine include myalgia (muscle pain), pharyngitis (sore throat), somnolence (drowsiness), dysmenorrhea (menstrual cramps), dry mouth, and fatigue.

Rare but serious side effects may include allergic reactions such as pruritus (itching), edema (swelling), dyspnea (trouble breathing), rash, and anaphylaxis (severe allergic response). Desloratadine should be stopped immediately if any of these symptoms occur, and alternative treatment should be considered.
