Overview
Cetirizine is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to chronic hives. It is used to relieve persistent itching, swelling, and discolored, raised skin welts.

Cetirizine is a second-generation antihistamine. It works by blocking histamine, a natural substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms such as hives, itching, and swelling.

How do I take it?
Prescribing information states that cetirizine is available as tablets, chewable tablets, capsules, orally disintegrating tablets, and oral liquid solution.

It is typically taken once daily with or without food. Dosing for chronic hives depends on age and formulation. Cetirizine should be taken exactly as directed by a healthcare provider.

Side effects
Common side effects of cetirizine include drowsiness, tiredness, dry mouth, headache, sore throat, nausea, and cough.

Rare but serious side effects may include fast or irregular heartbeat, confusion, trouble urinating, vision problems, or allergic reactions such as swelling of the face, lips, or throat. A rare side effect called rebound itching may occur in some people after stopping long-term use.
